In the golden month of September, the fields shimmer with the colors of autumn. As sweet glutinous corn enters its peak ripening season, the planting base of Baogui Agricultural Machinery Cooperative is bustling with activity. To ensure the best taste and market value of fresh-eating corn, the cooperative has abandoned traditional mechanical harvesting methods and organized farmers to carry out meticulous manual harvesting, while also implementing standardized sorting and integrated production-sales coordination to ensure that every kernel is safely gathered and that farmers maintain stable production and rising incomes.
Stepping into the fields, rows of corn stand tall and robust, with plump, well-proportioned ears showing promising growth. Given that sweet glutinous corn has thin skin, high moisture content, and is easily damaged and difficult to store, mechanized operations are highly likely to cause ear damage and affect subsequent sales. For this reason, the cooperative has adopted a "divided-zone responsibility, manual precision harvesting" approach. Workers coordinate their efforts, snapping ears, removing leaves, and bagging them in one smooth motion with skilled and efficient movements, ensuring harvesting efficiency while preserving the corn's integrity and freshness to the greatest extent possible.
After harvesting, the fresh corn is uniformly transferred to a sorting and processing point, where staff strictly screen each ear according to market standards, removing damaged and moldy ears. Following grading, neat arrangement, and fine packaging, the high-quality corn is quickly shipped through direct supply channels established by the cooperative to markets across the country. This "field-to-table" model effectively reduces intermediate circulation links, not only allowing urban residents to enjoy fresher corn but also enabling growers to earn higher returns.
In a concurrent interview, Guo Baogui of Baogui Agricultural Machinery Cooperative said: "This year's corn has shown promising growth and excellent quality, and overall market conditions have remained stable. Part of the corn we grow is supplied to processing plants, and the other part is sold externally as commercial corn. Given the special requirements for commercial corn, the cooperative organizes personnel uniformly for harvesting and sorting. After screening, we load the corn in batches and ship it to markets across the country."
The large-scale, standardized corn harvesting industry chain provides abundant nearby employment opportunities for local villagers. During the autumn harvest, the cooperative prioritizes absorbing idle labor from the village to participate in harvesting, sorting, and transportation, enabling villagers to earn a stable income without leaving their village.
In a concurrent interview, villager Liu Aixi said: "I help the cooperative move corn and earn a stable income of two to three hundred yuan a day. I feel quite good about it."
In recent years, Baogui Agricultural Machinery Cooperative has continued to optimize the full-chain system of "planting + harvesting + sales" for specialty crops, effectively solving problems such as small-scale scattered planting by farmers and limited sales channels. By extending the industrial chain and enhancing the value chain, the cooperative has effectively transformed agricultural harvests into tangible economic benefits for the people, injecting strong momentum into the revitalization of rural industries.
