Suzuki Motor Corp. has unveiled its first pure electric model, the "e SKY," entering Japan's most significant K-car (kei car) segment, further intensifying competition in the field.
Suzuki announced on Tuesday that the "e SKY" will go on sale in November, with a price of approximately 1.6 million yen (about 10,120 US dollars) after government subsidies.
This price is lower than Nissan's best-selling electric model Sakura, and also lower than BYD Company Limited (002594)'s first K-car Racco launched in July this year.
K-cars are affordable, extremely small vehicles that account for more than one-third of Japan's auto sales.
The addition of the "e SKY" further demonstrates that this type of mini electric vehicle is making Japan a key battleground for various brands — currently Nissan, Honda, Daihatsu, and now Suzuki have all launched electric K-cars.
Japanese brands collectively hold about 80% of the market share.
