Wall Street's well-known investor Cathie Wood, also known as "Wood Sister," has recently been increasing her position in Chinese autonomous driving company Pony AI through her firm ARK Invest. From October 6 to 8, ARK purchased Pony AI (NASDAQ: PONY) through its Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (ARKQ) for three consecutive trading days, accumulating about 321,800 shares with a total investment of approximately $1.96 million, equivalent to nearly 12% of its pre-increase holdings. This increase coincides with Pony AI's accelerated expansion of its overseas Robotaxi business. On October 8, Pony AI and Uber announced plans to launch road testing of the seventh-generation Robotaxi in London, UK, within the coming weeks. This marks an important step for both parties to further expand into the European autonomous mobility market, following their collaboration in Zagreb, Croatia.
According to ARK's trading records and holdings data, on October 6, ARKQ bought 172,300 shares of Pony AI; on October 7, it continued to add 36,091 shares; and on October 8, it bought another 113,370 shares. Over the three trading days, it cumulatively increased its holdings by 321,761 shares, with an estimated total investment of about $1.96 million based on prices on each trading day. As of the close on October 8, ARKQ held approximately 3.023 million shares of Pony AI, valued at about $17.41 million based on that day's closing price of $5.76, accounting for about 0.93% of the fund's assets. This purchase also continues ARK's previous allocations to Pony AI. Public trading history shows that ARK bought Pony AI multiple times in June and July this year, including a single-day purchase of about $1.4 million on July 16 and about $1.1 million on July 21. After entering August, the pace of buying slowed down until continuous increases reappeared in October.
It is worth noting that ARKQ's current holding weight in Pony AI is still less than 1%. Although the number of shares held increased by nearly 12% over three days, from the perspective of the entire fund's asset allocation, Pony AI remains a relatively small investment target. This means that this transaction is more suitable for observation from the angle of continuous position increases and portfolio adjustments. ARK has not yet publicly explained the specific investment reasons for these three purchases.
Behind the continuous increases, what does ARK value?
From the perspective of ARKQ's investment positioning, Pony AI is highly consistent with the fund's focus on autonomous driving, artificial intelligence, and robotics technology. As a company focused on the commercialization of autonomous driving technology, Pony AI not only has a self-developed L4 autonomous driving system but is also expanding revenue sources through Robotaxi fleet operations and technology cooperation models. This makes it an investment target in the process of autonomous driving technology moving from R&D and testing to commercial operations. However, the scale of ARK's increase also needs to be measured within the entire portfolio. Despite increasing its holdings by nearly 12% over the recent three trading days, as of October 8, Pony AI's weight in ARKQ was still only about 0.93%, with a market value of about $17.41 million. Compared with the fund's other core holdings, this allocation scale remains limited.
Meanwhile, Pony AI's stock price did not rise in tandem with ARK's continuous buying. From October 6 to 8, Pony AI's stock closed at $6.13, $6.07, and $5.76, respectively, falling about 6% over the three trading days. This trend indicates that ARK's continuous increases were only part of market trading activity during the same period, and it is not yet possible to judge solely on this basis that broader investors are simultaneously raising their valuation of Pony AI.
