Total Number of Dwellings Commenced in Australia Rises 7% in June Quarter

The total number of dwelling commencements in Australia rose 7% quarter over quarter to 52,201 in the June quarter in seasonally adjusted terms and 14.4% year over year, according to a report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics released on Wednesday.

There were 248,733 total sector dwellings under construction in the June quarter, of which 95,447 were new houses, the report said.

Meanwhile, the number of private sector house commencements rose 11.6% to 31,707 in the quarter sequentially, following a fall of 1.3% in the March quarter. House commencements rose 20.7% on an annual basis.

Commencements for private sector dwellings, excluding residential, inched down 0.1% quarter over quarter to 19,126 dwellings during the quarter, following a fall of 20.6% in the March quarter. The measure was up 4.6% year over year.

The total dwellings completed in Australia climbed 5.8% to 47,168 dwellings in the June quarter, in seasonally adjusted terms. Private new houses completed rose 1.4% to 27,039 dwellings, while private new other residential completions jumped 13.9% to 19,018 dwellings.

The value of total building work done rose 1.1% to AU$45.8 billion. The value of new residential building was up 1.4% to AU$23.6 billion and the value of total non-residential building up 0.8% to AU$18.16 billion. Work done on new houses rose 1.5% to AU$13.8 billion, while new other residential buildings rose 1.2% to AU$9.9 billion.
