FAA Grants JetBlue Exemption to Acquire 22 LaGuardia Slots From Spirit

The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday it granted JetBlue Airways (JBLU) and Spirit Airlines an exemption allowing them to complete a transaction in which Spirit would transfer 22 operating slots at New York LaGuardia Airport to JetBlue.

JetBlue will be prohibited from trading or leasing the 22 slots to any carrier until after April 2028, while the FAA also waived use-or-lose requirements through April 2027 to allow JetBlue to launch or expand service.

The FAA said the transfer would return scarce LaGuardia slots to active commercial service and benefit the public without increasing the number of airport operations.
