AGL Energy, Other Power Firms Oppose Expansion of Electricity Networks Into EV Charging Market

AGL Energy (ASX:AGL) is among a coalition of power companies and charging operators that is fighting the Australian Energy Market Commission's (AEMC) decision to allow power-grid firms to also build and own electric vehicle chargers, according to multiple Wednesday media reports.

The coalition, which also includes EnergyAustralia and Tesla, is arguing that electricity network firms would recover the costs of building EV chargers through higher electricity bills for households, even those that do not own electric vehicles, The Age reported.

The coalition wants power grid owners to first prove that the added infrastructure will provide value for consumers before being allowed to enter the EV-charging space, The Australian reported.

The Australian Energy Market Commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
