Canadian fertilizer producer Nutrien is shuttering its nitrogen operations in Trinidad for good due to natural gas constraints and uncertainty.
The company said Monday it will indefinitely shut down its nitrogen operations at the Point Lisas facility in Trinidad following an extensive review of strategic alternatives.
A closure of the operation was determined to be the optimal path to enhance free cash flow and return on invested capital, Nutrien said.
Nutrien previously launched a controlled shutdown of the facility in late October in response to port access restrictions and a lack of reliable and economic natural gas supply, which it said had reduced the free cash flow contribution of the Nitrogen operations over an extended period of time.
There will be no impact to expected 2026 nitrogen sales volumes since the company had assumed no production from its Trinidad facility. Nutrien said it remains well positioned to meet customer demand for nitrogen and grow volumes from its North American nitrogen assets through reliability improvements and projects to remove bottlenecks in operations.
The company has forecast nitrogen sales this year of between 9.2 million and 9.7 million metric tons, as well as 14.2 million to 14.8 million tons of potash and 2.4 million to 2.6 million tons of phosphate.
