This Small Mountain Community Has the East Coast's Most Expensive Ski Homes

Tucked into Vermont's Green Mountains, Stowe's 05672 ZIP Code has the priciest residential real estate of any major East Coast alpine-ski destination. Grounded in a history of winter sports and hospitality even before Stowe Mountain Resort opened in the 1930s, this small community has recently evolved into an all-season refuge. While buyers traditionally came from the Northeast, a new wave is fleeing the summer heat of Sunbelt states, driving secondary residences to nearly 70% of properties, according to Caroline Marhefka, a real-estate agent of Four Seasons Sotheby's International Realty. The August median listing price was $995,000, according to Realtor.com (Realtor.com, operated by News Corp, developed this methodology exclusively for The Wall Street Journal.) This demand shapes an architectural landscape where newer modern farmhouses and contemporary builds stand alongside older cedar homes and classic Swiss-style chalets. Meanwhile, historic homes are protected by the town's Historic Preservation Commission to safeguard Stowe's classic New England character.

Stowe's commercial district comprises two thoroughfares: the compact, walkable Main Street and Mountain Road, which stretches toward the ski resort. Connecting the business corridors is a 5.3-mile paved recreation path for walking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Shaw's General Store

Founded in 1895, this store has been passed down through five generations of the same family. It sells a mix of outdoor apparel, gifts, maple treats and souvenirs.

Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum

This museum was founded in 1988 to celebrate the state's winter-sports culture. It has a collection of more than 8,000 items, including retired equipment, vintage ski apparel, mechanical lift gear and archival photographs.

The Current

Sharing space with the Stowe Free Library, this contemporary arts nonprofit is located in a historic 1861 building. It features art exhibitions from both global and regional talent.

Von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort

Set on 2,600 acres, this family-owned resort was established in 1950 by the von Trapps, whose exit from Nazi-annexed Austria in 1938 inspired "The Sound of Music." Noting how Stowe's rolling hills mirrored their native home, the family settled on this property, which their descendants still own today.

Membership to have

Stowe's social scene is split across multiple clubs. Full-time residents and young families favor the Stowe Tennis Club for its active summer programs and pool. Second-home owners gravitate to The Club at Spruce Peak, which has ski-in, ski-out access, golf, pool facilities and more. Meanwhile, the rustic Lake Mansfield Trout Club has fishing and water activities.

Event of the year

The Stowe Balloon Festival is an annual summer tradition. Usually held in late June, the multiday event features morning and evening hot-air balloon launches, tethered rides, live music, local-food vendors and a nighttime-balloon display.

Advice for the buyer

Prices range from under $1 million -- where homes often need renovations -- to over $10 million. To stay competitive, buyers should take time to learn about Stowe's differing neighborhoods so they can act immediately when the right home hits the market.
