Insurance Australia Group (ASX:IAG) said its NRMA Insurance unit recorded a 72% jump in electric vehicle insurance quote requests in September from a year earlier, according to a Friday statement.

EV insurance quote enquiries have risen 80% year on year across the first nine months of 2026, capping off a record year, the statement said.

NRMA Insurance Executive Manager Motor Repair Supply Chain David Wilkes said the increase comes as Australian motorists face some of the highest fuel prices in Australian history.

The findings were reinforced by the insurer's latest Changing Gears report, which found interest in EVs continues to grow, with just 17% of Australians saying they would not consider buying one.

IAG's shares rose nearly 1% in recent Friday trade.
